Maggie Monday: Aging

At my sister's reception in Maine, my grandmothers sat next to each other at dinner. They hadn't seen each other during the cocktail hour as they had both been sat down in different areas. The dude walked in Mimi and my mother's cousin walked in Maggie. Both of them had painted canes. As they neared the table, they saw each other for the first time since my grandfather's funeral in 2004. "Rita!" Maggie exclaimed, "Look at us with our sticks. Did you ever think it would come to this?"

Over dinner they were sharing complaints, and Maggie says to Rita, "Oh, well, you're a year older than me." Like that makes a difference at their age! And really, you're still rubbing that in? Rita tore a ligament in her knee a few years ago (dusting while standing on the bed!). She refuses to have surgery, so what can you do? Maggie's hip has worn out. She's gotten to the point where the pain is too much to bear and she'll be having surgery on October 17th.

I'm sure she would accept your prayers, and I know she'd love some get well cards. You know what to do.

Ha, reminds me of the TV commercial for the Walgreens flu shot where the twin old ladies are saying... I'm older, I did it first, blah, blah, blah. LOL Gotta love the elderly... They all talk about their health issues and then I (in my 40's) think: Is this what I have to look forward to? LOL

Love this story! I have to very dear friends that constantly remind me that I'm the older one! I'm sure it will get really bad when we are really old! lol

Ohhh I received a get well card last month that would be perfect for Maggie ... I'll be finding it and sending it :)

I love reading your blog and would love to send a card to your grandmother. I miss mine so much! If you send me her full name and address I will be happy to send something to cheer her up. :-)

I went to visit my favorite(Great) Aunt at the hospital this afternoon. She is very sick and we don't know if she will make it. But, she had a smile for me and I could see that "Millie Twinkle" in her eyes. When my cousin mentioned all of the visitors today I told my aunt that she was a very popular person. Her comment....."I just thought that it was high time for a family reunion".

Got to love those little old ladies!

I always love reading about Maggie. I am five days older than my DH and he never lets an opportunity to say "Well you are five older than me!" Any other people around us are left wondering weeks, months, years....
