Blow Up

Big excitement today! A transformer outside our office blew and started a small brush fire. Our building was evacuated, and once it became clear that power wouldn't be restored for a while, we got sent home. You would think that this would give me extra time to hit the craft room and do some finishing, but no.

Instead, I will send you to Jen Funk Weber. Jen, a cross stitch designer you may know. started a program called "Stitching for Literacy" to promote reading among school children. They receive a handstitched bookmark for their efforts. Now, however, stitching support has dried up. (The local EGA chapter went under.) They need bookmarks up in Alaska ASAP.

"The bookmark can be of any age-appropriate, non-religious pattern. It can be made with any embroidery technique: cross stitch, needlepoint, crewel, Hardanger, something else."

I received this plea in an email, so I'm a little hesitant to blast the shipping address onto the internet, but if you're interested, I've got the address.

Jen has lots of ideas for bookmark finishing. That wasn't a technique I had planned to show, so think of it as a freebie and encouragement.

Please email me the address. I'd love to help by making and sending a bookmark or two.

Please email me the address. I have never stitched a bookmark before, but I am sure I would be able to figure out how to do the finishing.

Yay for an early day off from work! I wish I could send a stitched bookmark but I fear it'd be months before I finished one. :(
Is there a website or something so I can boost the signal? Thanks!

My EGA chapter makes bookmarks for our local libraries' literacy programs but I'm sure i could get a few more out of folks.
Could you send me the address?
Thank you
