Who's Afraid of the 13th?

Yesterday's library stitch-in was ill attended. Was it paraskavedekatriaphobia, we wondered? One woman, whose sister was born on Friday the 13th, reported that she claims she hasn't had a lot of bad Friday the 13ths, but an awful lot of bad Thursday the 12ths.

I almost finished the threadkeep by noon (our regular ending time). I had to wait a few more hours, but another one on the finishing pile! Yay, me!

More good news! Mabel will be coming home this weekend. She talked to our stitching librarian Thursday who reported that Mabel had been reading--and loved!--the book I recommended for her last time we were together. Another librarian had given her a book "that was all rapes and violence." It didn't look that bad from the cover, but I suggested she might like The Shop on Blossom Street. They didn't have it in large print so our librarian gave her A Good Yarn. Our library delivers to "shut ins," so Mabel will have more knitting adventures to delve into soon. I hope to see her back when I return from Maine.

On an entirely different, but still happy note, Sissy--who once complained she had been "dating for 20 years and was tired of it"--got engaged last night. Her boyfriend gathered as much of the family as he could and proposed in front of everyone. I think they'll be quite happy together, and I am over the moon with joy for my sister. I'm on the look out for an appropriate wedding sampler, so if you have an ideas, I'm listening. Her place is pretty stylish; I might say elegant traditional.

Lovely finish. Several come to mind--couldn't think of their names (perhaps because I'm marriage-phobic myself--wonder what the word is for that?), but the Drawn Thread did one called "Marriage of Minds." http://www.123stitch.com/cgi-perl/itemdetail.pl?item=DR103 I also like Theron Traditions' "Needles and Pins." (Needles and pins, needles and pins. When a man marries, his troubles begin." I love the design and the verse: http://www.123stitch.com/cgi-perl/itemdetail.pl?item=6506

Love the sampler! My sister-in-law was born on the 13th...and her address is 1313 too. She says for her, it's a lucky number.

Great finish and congrats to your sister! After 14 years of dating...I'm tired of it too!

Beautiful finish! And congratulations to your sister. :) I got tired after only 4 years. Thank goodness he took the hint, and we've been happily married for nearly five years now.

I just finished up Happily Ever After by Marie Barber. Would that work? I'd be happy to pass on the chart.

Since Friday was my birthday, I was a little taken aback when I overheard someone in a store talking about how she hates Friday the 13th. The day was pretty special to me! And for the record, I was born on a Thursday. My mother more or less picked the 13th as my birthday since I was a week or two overdue and her labor was induced. When I was younger, I often wondered why she couldn't have waited another day.

Congrats to your sister! I second Marriage of Minds as a gift for them.

Congrats to your sister! I stitched a wedding piece a few years ago from a chart that was in Just Cross Stitch. The design is kind of Lorrie Birmingham-ish (she might have been the designer, I don't know) but it has beads and a "carved ivory" heart-shaped button and I thought it looked pretty elegant. I finished it as a bell pull rather than a framed sampler. Maureen Appleton also has a wedding sampler with a verse that begins "Today I will marry my best friend." It's a beautiful design.

Excellent work! It's really lovely and I like the border a lot. It makes the piece, in my opinion. Congratulations to your sister! I'm glad that her boyfriend did it up right. As far as wedding samplers, I think any of the long samplers from The Sweetheart Tree would make a nice wedding sampler. I did Pretty Posies for a friend a couple of years ago. I have several of the samplers, if you want to borrow any.

Gorgeous finish! And congratulations to your sister. A destination wedding sounds fun! And I love grandma's movie reviews - can't wait to hear what she's seen lately.

A very late comment, but -- I'm currently working on DT's Marriage of Minds. It's absolutely "elegant traditional", but unless your sister is getting married two years from now (or you're a certified turbostitcher), it might take too long to finish before the wedding. I'm planning on finishing mine in 18 months, in time for our 10th anniversary!
