I Don't Care How Much Money You've Spent

I don't care how much money you spend on your cross-stitch. There. I've said it.

You do spend money. You don't spend money. You spend the money you're "allowed" to spend. You spend more than you're allowed to spend. You "buy" yourself extra money by stitching. You earn it but you don't buy anything with that extra money.

Maybe you're keeping track for yourself. Good for you. That's not that interesting to me as a reader.

One of the things I can't tell from reading most of these Stitch from Stash posts is how much money you have. I don't know your fiscal budget; how much money you make; how much you owe your creditors. No idea. These reports are completely out of context.

I also don't know what kind of person you are. If you're  parsimonious, then I am completely unimpressed by your ability to not spend money. Seriously, if you're not spending money on anything. what's one more thing not to spend on? If you're completely loaded, who cares if you keep your spending below $25 per month? It's not like you can't let loose on every other kind of spending.

Have you had to take control because you have some kind of compulsive spending problem? Because that, I want to read about.

You know what? If you were starving your children so you could buy the whole collection of Belle Soie, I might read your update. But if you're not spending money again this month? Who cares? I don't spend money on cross-stitching most months.

Good luck to you with your record keeping. But post after post after post of "spent $x on this" bores me. And I'm not reading it.

Love it. I'm back after a few years of blog reading hiatus. I used to read your blog a few years back and I'm delighted that you are still living up to your name. I'm sure you don't remember me, but I used to blog (very short lived) as the Stitching Strumpet, and I sent your Maggie a 90th(?) birthday card. Life happened and now I'm hoping to reconnect online with other stitchers/multicrafters.

new blog at www.offthegridneedlearts.com
I promise there will be no budget/stash $ posts.

Had a chuckle or 3 over this entry--thanks!

Lol! There you go again saying the things I think as I click the "next" button.

Well said! This applies to all those "Sunday Stash" reports I see on quilting blogs as well. Let's face it--we probably all have more stash than we need and we should be spending time enjoying it instead of creating spreadsheets about it.

So very true!

There you go...haha couldn't agree more. I really feel it is my duty to keep my favorite shop in business.

I don't really want to know how much I've spent over the years..cheaper than therapy I'm hoping. I figure I am acquiring stash while employed so I will have lots of eye candy to share when I'm retired.
Thanks for saying what many of us are thinking!

OMG! You hit the nail on the head, I don't read or comment on the Stash Budget Reports. Like you I think its silly. I go months and months without buying anything, who cares right? Its the stitching I want to see!

I was brought up to believe that it is vulgar to discuss what things cost and how much you spend or make. (1950-60s and New England. What can you say?) Since that was a time where there wasn't that much to buy and most people had just one ordinary car and there were no high-end appliances and no electronics to speak of and credit cards were in their infancy, no one knew if you were a pauper or a prince, which made people's lifestyles mercifully more private/mysterious (other than listening in on the party line you shared with the neighbors) and probably less stressful.

I stitch from my stash more than I used to, because I like the older designs better and because it's occurred to me only recently that since I'm hitting 60 this year, my days of stitching are probably numbered, and I might as well get cracking on the good stuff.

I keep track for my own purposes. Since my blog is my personal journal, that's where the data lands. At my age [60-something], I stitch from stash for two reasons: 1] I actually like everything I have bought and 2] I don't want to leave my hapless heirs sorting through mountains of stuff that they have no clue how to dispose properly. It is not so much a financial concern as a matter of not wasting the resources I do have. Having collected interesting charts, linens and fibers for years, I plan to use them now that I have the leisure to do so. If I see something I really want, of course, I will purchase it. But to continue buying masses of new stuff when I haven't yet stitched what I have on hand seems greedy. Realistically, I only have so many years left and that whole S.A.B.L.E. deal never made sense to me.

Ah, frugal boasters, how we love them.
Honestly, even recording that only seems useful (to me) if you need some sort of guilt-inducing tool to force yourself to stitch the thing you purchased materials for. But if you need that, your motivation for cross-stitching may be skewed.

Yeah, totally agree with you. It's almost like the people that comment on a post saying what you are doing isn't their cup of tea. Hmmm, then how about not even commenting???? LOL.

Just found your blog. And as a first time reader, you've just hooked me :) I usually skim through the stitch from stash posts, only stopping to look at the pictures if there are any. I though about joining stitch from stash, but the budget doesn't work if you have to buy kits for classes. I do my own record keeping behind the scene.

Good one! I don't read those posts either - and I don't post anything like that on my blog. ;) Happy stitching!

I like the idea of stitching what you've bought rather than acquiring more and more stuff that you would never have time to stitch, but then I also like looking through everyone's purchases and stash lists for inspiration! I did Stitch from Stash last year but have given up as it just made me want to be "naughty" and spend more!
The SAL I really don't understand is TUSAL but then maybe I'm lacking in the sense of humour department, or I just don't like keeping rubbish.
I'm wondering about swapping my kids for a thread collection though?!

I must say I agree!!

I joined SFS in January thinking that it might make me want to stitch more, it didn't, I did like stashing the money away each month though and now i have a little jar with quite a few notes in that i probably wouldn't have had if i hadn't joined. What I can't understand, and to be honest it seems totally pointless to me is that some people don't play with real money, so they say the have x amount, but they don't. The TUSAL, i really think is a waste of time.
Thanks for speaking out for us, lol

As stitchers we always have more stash than we will probably ever complete in a lifetime... But I agree I read for inspiration... To see the creative ways another talented stitcher has changed a chart... Finished a completed piece... To laugh, cry, and feel connected to them... To pray for them as they need it... I do not care really how much you spend or make in life... It is the best part... Those things are omitted ... I agree the posts of what is spent and a savings from it is just boring,,, stitching is a passion of love and the cost is great... But it is cheaper than therapy and seems to help me the same way, I say AMEN to your post and it was good to know I was not the only one thinking this is kinda boring. Thank you for your post it makes me feel normal.
