When I was at my LNS, The Strawberry Sampler recently, I saw these:
What cute finishing I thought! (And then whipped out my phone, right?) Pretty easy, just a regular flat ornament but instead of mounting it on a like-sized backing, you make the backing oversized. This also means that you have to make a back for the backing. Then when I was poking around Vonna's finishing site, I found instructions to make these! Vonna's great directions here.
See what a difference a little trim makes? Use pom poms and a (Lizzie*Kate?) and it's whimsical; use cording and a Prairie Moon and it's traditional; use Little House and some twine and it's country. How versatile!
Compare mine to the red and green ones above. I will give you a piece of advice my mother always gave me, until you feel confident with the technique, use a fabric with an all-over pattern. Because working with patterns with straight lines (like I've done) complicates things. Whether you're sewing or gluing (though the latter is a bit easier). (It is straighter than it looks here. I think it's the photography.)
You can see that the cording I used has a little metallic glint to it. The homespun I used for the backing also has metallic shot through the burgundy stripes. (You can't have too much glitz at Christmas.)

These are cute. Vonna does great tutorials too.
Good job! I always stay away from those stripes and plaids. But they look so nice, it's hard to resist!
I like it! I like it. I think the plaid is fab!
Another adorable finish Nikki. I can send you some of mine to finish if you run out.
