The Social Network

The dude and I have free movie channels this weekend. (Note to DirectTV: we aren't convinced.) We watched The Social Network which we never got around to seeing the first time around. I was trying to decide what I was going to blog about tonight, since I missed taking photos of my stitching today. I googled Saturday memes. Funnily enough Saturday six wanted followers to name 6 things that you did more before you discovered social networking? That seems apropos. So let's do it!

1. Read things that were more than a few hundred characters long...whole novels even!
2. Stitched--I usually finish about 25-30 projects per year. Last year I only finished 16. This year I'm at about 11.
3. Email--I sent more messages. Emailing, of course, replaced actual letter writing.
4. I went places and didn't meet up with people who lived there. It wasn't a lonelier vacation, just a different kind.
5. I didn't think much about people from my past that I had lost touch with. (Note: this isn't all it's cracked up to be.)
6. Kept more bits of useless information to myself.

You'll notice that social networking hasn't cut into my phone time. That's because my whole life I hardly ever talked on the phone. When my aunt writes to remind us to call Maggie, she always says that it won't be a long call, since she's "not a phone person." I think it may be genetic.

Here's something else I didn't do: I didn't whip out my phone and take pictures of crazy things when I was shopping.

Frick, I'm so old I remember when you made a plan and then showed up on time because you couldn't really get in touch with people you were meeting when you were on the road. That's something I'd like to have back.

Being in touch isn't it's all it's cracked up to be or not being in touch?

And yes, I remember those days too!

You're right; that's referent is fuzzy. I mean being in touch. I changed the sentence without changing the parenthetical note. Oops!

I'm so old that I had to deal with a "wet copier" (as opposed to a Xerox) on one of my first jobs, in addition to a typewriter (oh, there were no computers) that had a manual return. For those of you too young to remember, there was an arm/handle on the left side of the carriage, and you had to take your left hand and slam the carriage to the right after typing each sentence. And postage was only $.06.

I am laughing about the typewriter description. You also had to remember to hit that arm a second time when you were double spacing. Oh, the good old college days!

Ah, and the type eraser with brush to rid the gum bits... or waiting for white out to dry!

I'm compiling a pros list of iPhone vs Blackberry.

I actually remember those wet copiers - they called them ditto machines in our elementary and high schools.

I spent WAY LESS TIME on the computer before facebook. WAY less.
