The Dude Says I Should Just Wait It Out...

I'm sorry I've been absent. I've been so cranky lately. Everything annoys me.

People keep pissing me off:

  • the woman who brought her breakfast to the dog park. WTF? Dogs and food. That'll end happily.
  • the little dog people who insist on bringing their dogs into the big dog side.
  • Philadelphia for sending me three sets of tax documents when I made under $1000 in the city last year. Really, how much can I owe them? And I prepaid based on the much higher 2009 city income. So stop pushing--you owe me
  • Kate Middleton, who should spell her nickname "Cate" since she is Catherine. (The dude assures me that England doesn't do Cate-with-a-C. So really, all of England is annoying me.)
  • the woman who curated the art show of one of the organizations I'm involved in.
  • people who write boring blog posts. (Here's something I did. Here's another thing I did. And then we went here, and then we went there.)
  • bloggers who really need to learn to use a semicolon. I'm also annoyed that making corrections in the comments is considered rude.
  • people who write "would of" when they mean "would've." (Also could of, should of, must of.) Especially when they work in schools. What kind of a role model are you? (Here's a hint: under no circumstances would a person write "of" after would, could, or should. Even the state of West Virginia knows this.)
  • People who can't spell "lose." Seriously. How the fuck does that happen?
I'm crawling back under my rock now.

Let me jump onto the list of people that piss you off--the first "Cate" I ever heard of was Cate Blanchett, and I figured she was showing her artistic side. I grew up in an Irish Catholic family with Catherines out the wazoo, and they're all Kate; no Cates in my family.

But if you're annoyed by people that don't know that Jack is a nickname for John, I'm down with that. Because, really. ;)

How about apostrophe abuse?! Drives me nuts to see plurals made possessive.

What I find annoying is when no one will respond to a post like this one.

What? Just because you have something to complain about everyone acts like you have committed a crime.

I like your post and I am glad your telling how you feel. Nothing wrong with this.

I would hug you but I'm a bit afraid of you when you are in a pissy mood :)

You can always comment on my blog and correct me. I might not remember or care, but I'll always read it.

Hope you get to feeling your old self soon!

Bitch away! It's like a breath of fresh air. ;)

Holy Mother of God, you probably head right for the liquor cabinet after reading my stupid crap...

(Like how I constantly use punctuation in inappropriate places, and how I can't seem to stop talking about dog pee.)

As for that rock....I much prefer to remain under mine. It's cozy and they know me there. Just make sure that the lighting is adequate for your stitching needs.

Coni (with a C for crying out loud)

I've been annoyed by everyone and everything lately as well...hence why I haven't posted anything in weeks. This is the BEST post ever....it's the first one I clicked on since my "hiatus" and I'm glad I did!

How about this one- I work with someone who thinks "supposed" is "post"...for example, he'll write "I'm post to go to the store tonight." Like seriously, how STUPID can you be?!?!?! And how did you get out of kindergarten!?

I think everyone has the a constitutional right to bitch especially about incorrect word usage; therefore, I will always listen to this topic. (was that : correctly done?)

When my youngest daughter was in fourth grade, the teacher sent home a note about her behavior wtih three mispelled words. I used a red pen and corrected and told her to contact me when she could pass fourth grade spelling. I am also a bitch.

I love you.

People who don't know the difference between its and it's. That's my pet hate.

Your blog is probably the only one that I actually read rather than skim. I mostly look at pictures.

I'm sure I'm guilty of boring blog posts. I mostly just post pictures of pieces I'm working on. I don't have much else to say really. My writing energy is put into my job, and I don't have much left for my spare time.

What I especially like about your blog is that you don't care who gets angry about what you write. I'm just not that brave.

I can't type either. I meant to say was that ; correctly done?

Oh no, a correction in the comments!!!!!

Well, first of all, don't remove the comment.....because I'm British, lol, but I did live in PA, does that get me Brownie points?
Second, can't help with the Cate bit but I am so in agreement with murky grammar. The one that makes me want to SCREAM is photo's......for crying out loud, people, it is a plural word, no more no less! Feel better now, thanks, Anna!

Jenny said...

Wow! Now I feel cranky too...
Grammar & spelling is not always the easiest, especially when some of us bloggers write in our "second language"... I always had problems distinguishing between “bee” and “be” in English class back in Sweden when I was a kid. One day my exasperated teacher drew a bumble-bee next to a "bee" that should have (!!!) been a "be". I learned the difference after that! She was truly a great teacher!
Yep, my posts may be boring to some people and entertaining to others. I write more for other stitchers and my family back in Sweden than to win any literary contests...

Mouse said...

whoops have you been reading my blog ..lol :( sorry I am one of those who's spellings and apostrophes are not always correct (trying very hard here ;) ask Gillie ..lol and I think it is very unfortunate that Kate cannot keep her Kate bit at any future samplers will be W C !!!! ..lol hope you have calmed down now with a bit of stitching :) love mouse xxx

The dude is right about Cate - it's just not English! I'm okay with her at the moment but if the media start calling her Princess Catherine I will start screaming!!

You are only a Princess Name if you were BORN a Princess. If you marry a Prince then you take his name or become a title (eg Princess Michael of Kent took hubby's christian name). Diana chose to be Diana, Princess of Wales - she was not ever Princess Diana but that's what all the media call her and it makes me want to spit :-)

I was going to invite you to read my new blog, but now I'm abit nervous :-) Come and have a peek, if it's really boring then send me some constructive critism!

ps I love your blog, it's one of my favourites!

Do I ever hear you. And what about those who don't know the difference between 'take' and 'bring' or 'gone' and 'went'. Makes it hard to be sympathetic to the teacher's union. And I thought all this annoyance this year was just me!

Here are a couple of things that bug me; someone asking "Can you do something or other?" "Yes, I CAN. Are you asking me if I'm able or if I will?"
And... "How are you?" "I'm good." Cookies are good, people are well.

doris said...

I can't even get started bitching about the way people spell (or don't) and punctuate (or don't). Griping about it is like eating M&M's; there's no good stopping place. So I'll stop now.

Take deep, slow breaths and think calming thoughts. Or just enjoy the anger for a little while.

Did I use that semicolon correctly? I rarely use them, so coaching will be happily received.

Wow, you are cranky!! I do try to use proper punctuation and spelling. But my brother's sisters are just horrible, and I have had to deal with a great number of e-mails due to a family death. You would absolutely have a heart attack reading those. Hope you feel a bit better soon.

lol. How about misspellings on signs, vehicles, etc.? My favorite was a handmade sign for a weekend "grage sale". I assume he/she meant "garage". I have no idea what a grage is.

I'm pretty sure we all have days when we could just knock someone's head off for no reason.

I started a comment that got so long I thought maybe I should be writing my own post. Or maybe not. We'll see.

I know I make mistakes...but I have a math brain. My checkbooks balance... my memory of English class over 30 years ago is a little faint. The choice is either try my best or not blog.

Like Jenny, my audience is sometimes family and friends in the far reaches of the world. So, while some posts are boring, life is boring sometimes.

My pet peave? People who write without capitalizing anything. Drives me nuts. I hate reading like that... or reading posts where the writing is centered and the line breaks are in the strangest spots..... combine the two? I'm toast. Good things they put pictures in their posts.

Keep up the bitchin' posts. It sure got some comments!!

It drives me nuts when things aren't spelled correctly. That must be left over from having the nuns rap me on the head in Catholic school. The extra apostrophes that aren't needed at the end of words or names makes me cranky too. The worst? My mother-in-law who misspells my name and her only grandson's name - WTF? I've been married to her son for 25 years now so I would hope she would have figured it out by now!
Go forth and be cranky - there are many of us right there with you!

Yowzers! Hope you are feeling better! I can't say anything that others have not already said.

English major. A bit OCD. Definitely type A. Things like "creative spelling" for names really bother me (Alysyn for Allison) as do many of the more over the top names nowadays (really, people, remember that Moon Unit and Dweezil grew up and changed their names). The misued apostrophe drives me right up the wall. If I see it on a restaurant chalkboard, I'll fix it!

lewmew said...

Oops - MISUSED apostrophe. One of my faults is relying on spellchecker too much!

I had a crap day. Now I feel better.

Oh my.

Who let the snarkie loose?

Plz feel free to swing by blog anytime; however, don't forget to correct the spelling, punctuation errors, and call me out on all my daily nothings in the comments section.

That is what friends are for.

Enjoy the day, stitch well.

HAHA. Crankiness produces more comments than ever!

Lose vs. loose is also a pet peeve of mine. I have so many, though.

I hate orientated vs. oriented.

Um, I hope I'm not one of the offenders in your list! Well, actually, it's probably a given- I DO write boring posts. I'm glad you can get down with your inner cranky; my evil-not-so-DD called me out for being passive aggressive (cripes! I'm second-guessing ALL my spelling) because I had the nerve to mention I was frustrated they haven't moved out yet. Chewed me a new poopshoot, she did! I deleted her comment and all reference to her blog from mine. HA! Teach her a thing or two about passive aggressive...mutter mutter...
Now, "lose" and "loose", that's something I thought Merriam Webster had gone ahead and changed and didn't send me a memo. I've seen it written incorrectly in both instances so many times lately!
Sorry if I've annoyed you with grammar and punctuation errors. I'm a pretty good speller, but also a painfully dyslexic typist so I transpose a lot of letters; the typos usually involve the letter "a".

MelissaD said...

Sorry to post a 2nd time but had a meeting at work earlier today when yet another person said "mute" when they meant to say "moot", as in "moot point". That drives me bananas, but not wanting to be politically risky I did not correct a manager in front of others.

mumble..grumble..back to my cave. Care to join me?

The Queen Bee said...

Well crap.....there I go spelling peeve wrong in my comment. Figures. I blame it on the craptastic phonics system used by the PA school system back in the 60's. That's a whole long post all its own.....but I can still learn....see how I knew not to put an ' in its?

People who use loan as a verb irk me. While I recognize that some of the more tolerant dictionaries have accepted and recorded this usage, I have not. I constantly argue with my son who likes to expound on the "psychology" of language, how it is a living entity constantly evolving, else we'd all be speaking as Chaucer and his ilk did. True enough, but one must have some standards. I get particularly cranky at this time of year. It has to do with grading so many 7th and 8th graders' essays. By the way, any errors noted in the above are keyboarding errors ... I don't make the other sort!

It bothers me when commonly used words aren't spelled correctly, especially on realtors' ads. My pet peeve - when people spell the words "separate" and "receive" wrong.

Oh dear, i'm probably guilty of boring blog posts, perhaps that's why i don't get many comments, lol

I'm not the words greatest at spelling, but my pet hate.. when people use 'off' when they mean 'of', 'affect' when it should be 'effect'. The one that annoys most is when someone askes if they can 'lend' something from you, no you can 'borrow'.

Well done you for being brave enough to have a rant :-)

Anonymous said...

It really irritates me when people misspell "a lot". I see it written as "alot" or recently I've seen a blogger spell it "allot". What 's up with that? "A lot" is not a compound word!

Andrea said...

Now stuck in my head, the song from Elton John, "The Bitch is Back", lol! And aren't we all the better for it? I'm sure my blog gives you fits if you read it. Although I try not to be too terribly boring, there are probably spelling and grammatical errors galore (there and in this comment, lol). And you know, it doesn't bother ME one bit. If it bothers anyone else, they can move on or chew on it for a while, whatever floats their boat. Bitches need something to bitch about, right? ;-)

Anyway, here's a couple of things that bug me:

When people pronounce the H in vehicle. As in vee-HICK-ile. Living in Texas, I hear this often. That is wrong, just WRONG, I don't care how much they argue the point.

When highly paid news anchors say "um" a lot. They are getting paid to talk and every other word being UM just pisses me off. I actually wrote to Anderson Cooper (who is my next husband, unless he's gay, in which case I'm his BFF) to please, for the love of God and our future together, to just STOP it.
(The ex-White House spokesperson Robert Gibbs did this so much that I'm sure I lost over a gallon of blood, from it shooting out of my eyes and ears, during his tenure as SP.)

Folks who constantly post that they need a blog break and then post again two days later. Really? People still do this sh*t? That's like leaving a lipstick or key at your boyfriends place so he'll have you back over to pick it up. LAME. Just don't post for crap's sake! We'll get along JUST fine for the two flippin' days you're gone!

Welcome back SB :)
xoxo

One of my many pet peeves is the misuse of their, there and they're. I don't come across "they're" a lot, but I see "there" used in place of it often.

I am glad that incorrect spelling and misuse of grammar offends so many of us. I was beginning to feel that I was just a cranky old crone who needed to lighten up!

And what about distracted drivers using cell phones, texting, and engaging in heaven knows what else while behind the wheel?

I'd better stop now and try to think pleasant blue and pink thoughts. Your rant has made many of us feel better.

I really like your post. I'm not sure if I'm just mean and cranky or if the world's people went stupid on me and I can't come to grips with it. I've been pondering whether I should start a stitching blog for over a year but I'm sure I'd scare away my readers just as soon as they read one of my rants.

While I'm here I may as well ask you: do you ever feel like knocking people in the mouth when they ask for, "advise"? I do!

Have a great evening,
J

ps - Feel free to correct my punctuation. I may be weird but when I screw something up I really like to know about it.

If it's any consolation everything seems to be pissing me off these days. I just want to smack people. I did have to laugh about you being pissed of at all of England. I don't get the whole Catherine/Kate thing either. And frankly, I'm so tired of people writing "sneak peak". Of course I've recently seen "peak your interest too". It wears me out.

You are one brave lady!

My pet peeve? People who say they bought something "offline instead of saying "online". Did I use my quotation marks correctly?

I don't post much just because I am boring and my posts would therefore be boring. And I avoid all controversial topics. Boring, boring, boring.

Barb said...

I forgot the quotation mark after the word offline. You're making us nervous girlfriend!

I'm just glad to hear that I am not the only one cranky these days. I have no reason for it, I just am. Therefore, most everything annoys me, so I just try to stay out of everyone's way.

And I'm really tired of being asked "Are you okay?". Because honestly, you really don't want to hear the answer, you just want me to snap out of it. I'm trying...

The hosts on one of our local public radio stations have an infuriating habit of saying, in reference to pledge payments, "...or we can invoice you." It just makes me want to pound on something and scream.

Andrea said...

Oh, one more! What do you think of the current trend of kids saying "conversate". Another one that sends me straight to the liquor cabinet ;-)

Anonymous said...

Heh. Gonna be "rude" now. :)

In academic writing, using contractions is generally considered poor form. If you wrote "can't", you should have used "can not" because it's more proper. (I really have no idea why they insist on it, but they do, which was really annoying.)

Also, the contraction "would've" is from the words "would have", not "would of". Seeing as how contractions are literally combining two words, I would think that "would of" would turn into "would'of", which makes no sense. Contractions usually condense a set of words (or keep character count the same, as in "it's"). Also, "would of" just doesn't seem like it's correct. In general, it sounds wrong.

Anna van Schurman said...

Anonymous, first of all it's cannot--all one word.

I don't understand your point about would've. People write "would of" because that's what they here. It shouldn't sound wrong, it should look wrong. It is wrong. Period.

Well look at you setting off a firestorm! Between Stitch Bitch's diatribe and all the other pet peeves in the comments, you all have a lot of mine covered. Some days I just assume people were careless, lazy or rushed and didn't bother to check their work before hitting 'post'. Other days I snarl and go clean something.

When it comes to boring blog posts I feel that I have the choice to not read and to discontinue following anything that doesn't float my boat. I am thankful that the world holds a wondrous variety of almost everything because what might appeal to some may not appeal to everyone. I'm the sort who marches to the beat of my own drummer and I'm mostly content to let others do the same.

A little bit of the inner bitch every now and again does a soul good. You don't seem like the touchy feely type, but I'll send you a virtual hug anyway !
