Not Another Stella Sunday

I really thought the DNA results would arrive this week. They say they shipped on 11/10 from Oregon. Apparently they shipped from the moon! So I cannot do the big reveal today.

Instead, Missy Ann declared Melissa's last post, the "Thanksgiving Menu Meme."

We're having Thanksgiving at my parents' house this year. And because my mother is in full-on house selling mode, there can be absolutely no cooking or baking at her house. Heating up, okay. So she is getting most of the dinner from a local supermarket. They will make turkeys, potatoes, squash, rolls, and two pies. I told her that the reason we don't just go out to eat on Thanksgiving (as she has wanted to do for years) is that we want the dishes that make our Thanksgiving our Thanksgiving. So I am bringing broccoli casserole and triple corn stuffing--of which I have spoken many times (the recipe is available in the Black Family Reunion cookbook) (Yes, I know, we are Whitey Whitersons from New Hampshire. Deal.) Sissy is making Marla's Potatoes (cf BFR Cookbook). I volunteered her. She hates to cook, but I know she's made them before. My aunt is bringing some kind of date pie. Do you think my mother will let us make fresh whipped cream? (Do you know I was in college before I had whipped cream from a can?)

Speaking of college and being home at Thanksgiving--for the first time in 20 years--it's my 25th high school reunion while I am at home. I think I would rather chew off my left arm than go--and as you know, I know what it is like to stitch one handed. What do you think? There's a poll for that.

I've never had whipped cream from a can, it's just wrong on so many levels! :) Never been to a school reunion either...are the two things connected?

Good luck with your Thanksgiving preparations, it's interesting to us johnny foreigners ;)

Have you gone to reunions before? If not, I'd go to this one just for shits and giggles. I didn't go to any of mine until my
20th and it was eye-opening and fun. Would I go to any more? No way Jose. I'm surprised my class got even got that reunion off the ground - I think that drugs had blasted out most of their brain cells. So maybe they'll have one for the 40th. Nevertheless, once was enough - but you need to go to one.

Haven't done any of my reunions. I figure that the people I want to really know about, I have kept in touch with.

Good luck with planning Thanksgiving!

Sounds like you've got a handle on Thanksgiving. We'll be with relatives I haven't seen in more than 25 years and I'm not sure it'll be fun. Oh well......

I have never had a great desire to connect, or reconnect, with my HS classmates but part of that is because we went to HS in Korea and it's a bit of a travel for everyone. If it were nearby, I would probably go, at least once. Then, if everyone looked better than me, I'd never go to another one! LoL

Sounds like your thanksgiving plans are coming together. I still have to work on ours...

Have a good holiday.

School reunions? Nope. Not a chance. The person who organises them used to bully me at school. Why would I want to revisit that?

My side of the marriage does the big family Thanksgiving deal ... have to, really, since we number one matriarch, five siblings [four of whom have spouses], nineteen in the next generation [of whom 10 are old enough to have spouses or significant others] ... but this year, we'll be doing Thanksgiving for my husband's side of the family ... much much smaller: he has one sister and one first cousing, both single ... to that we will add my youngest son ... my older son lives on the West Coast and is bringing his family home for Christmas and my daughter may be sharing Thanksgiving with her SOs family ... so I don't know if I'll be cooking for five or for seven yet. My husband has gout so I'll have a roast pork as well as a small turkey breast, stuffing will contain Italian sausage and pingoli nuts, side dishes will be Irish mashed potatoes [a once a year cholesterol fest containing loads of butter and real cream], candied yams [brought by sister-in-law], eggplant parm [two of the guests are vegetarians],garlicky green beans, pumpkin soup [made with a miso base and rice milk - for the vegetarians], a meatless stuffing [will have to look up your recipe], baked acorn squash with butter and maple sugar, steamed broccoli and a green salad with lots of red onions, peppers and black olives. Cider and pumpkin and apple pies from the local orchard top of the menu ... sharp cheddar for the apple pie and real whipped cream for the pumpkin pie. A very eclectic menu but it works for us and I don't have to cook again for four days.

I think you should go to a high school reunion once, just to see who's changed and who hasn't. I'm with Lee - skip the banquet and just go for drinks, unless you know that the food will be decent.

Does your reunion include an evening of just drinks? Those are the best events. If not, I'm with Lee also ... crash the party after dinner. Our reunions have actually been sort of fun. Really. And I'm not much of a joiner/participater.

Guess I'm the weirdo- been to every reunion and had a good time every time. Maybe we just all like one another?
