That Dern Parrot

My neighbor has a parrot--a conure--that I sometimes take care of when he is in Disney World. (Seriously, if he's away, he's in Disney.) They live across the street. It's a normal street with houses set back thirty feet or so. And still I can hear his parrot screaming...sometimes even when I am in the house with the door closed. Apparently this has a purpose in nature and since parrots aren't truly domesticated you get the screaming.

I am guessing this is why Dawn Bradford named the pattern, "That Dern Parrot." She either lives with one or visits one. Or saw one once in someone's home.  My parrot, who is always silent, never poops on the couch, and doesn't bite, also has much more muted coloring.

I've now completed the main stitching, and the next step will be to do the chain stitching on the front and the back. This is finished as a mattress-style cushion and there is some small amount of stitching on the sides as well. The main part is done.

  1. Conures are well known for their screaming. We had one, Rico, that also took a small but noticeable chunk out of Niek's face on one memorable occasion. I'm pretty sure words other than "dern" were employed. ;)

  2. One of our managers at work brings her parrot to the warehouse each day. For company she says. I wish I was impolite enough to think of a more descriptive word than "dern" for her parrot. Noisy brute. Your embroidered one is by far superior and much much quieter.

  3. It sounds as though a stitched parrot is the way to go. Really pretty colors Anna - it's going to be great.

  4. That is a lovely stitched parrot.

We had an African Grey parrot when I was very little. He was just lovely, and he used to sing to me.

  5. Your Dern Parrot is lovely - the neighbor could keep the live one. I've just become tolerant (lost irrational fear) of songbirds in the last few years, but CAN NOT imagine any kind living inside with me!

  6. Great job on that Dern Parrot Nikki. Your doing such a wonderful job and I love the colors. We had birds before we got all the cats. They are very messy and very noisey. Like my cats better.

  9. Your parrot looks lovely, and I'll bet his quiet style is appreciated, LOL. Loved your earlier post of Stellaboris, I think you did a nice job on the broken tail :)

  11. Stitched birds are the only kind allowed in our house. I grew up with an Irish father who forbid having a bird in the house as they're bad luck, and that's kind of stuck with me
