Maggie Monday: Q&A

Last Monday, while we were waiting for our lunch order to arrive, I took the opportunity to ask Maggie some questions. I have to tell you, she was a little disappointed in you. She thought you'd want to know a lot more about her.

What's your favorite movie: Dr. Zhivago. {This answer elicited remarks from the peanut gallery, but the old lady stood firm.}

What's the best movie you've seen lately?
Here, Auntie Em interrupts: I'm picking the movies now, so we only see light stuff.
Maggie: Death at a Funeral--funny!

What advice would you like to share? Do you have any regrets? I should have gone to college; I had to leave [high] school in my third year. I liked school. I'd also do less getting married; once was sufficient. I would have gone to Vegas more. {May I point out that my grandmother came home from Vegas married to her 3rd husband?}

What about travel? The best place I've been was Hawaii. Or Greece, it's a toss-up. I always wanted to go to Australia, but it was too far.

Don't you want to know my favorite song? It's This Love of Mine.
Aunti Em: "This Little Love of Mine, I'm gonna let it shine?"
Maggie: No, {breaks into song} "This love of mine goes on and on/Though life is empty since you have gone/You're always on my mind/Though out of sight/It's lonesome through the day/But oh! the night/I cry my heart out/It's bound to break/Since nothing matters/Let it break/I ask the sun and moon/The stars that shine/What's to become of it/This Love of Mine" (Listen here.)
{My grandmother can sing, which surprises me because my mother and I can't carry a tune in a bucket. Though our buckets are much more musical than my father's, but I digress.}

Any crazy stories about bar patrons from when you were working at the bar? {I have to tell you this question totally delighted her} Everyone at the table shouts, "cat food pate!" {A bit of background, the bar my grandmother worked in was a total dive with the requisite alcoholics and ne'er-do-wells. She used to bring in hors d'oeuvres but it wasn't really a place where the food was the draw. She'd get mad if patrons would eat her food and not tip her, understandably.}

Well yes there was the time this one guy came in and I served him cat food. I told him it was cat food, and he told me it was pate. I kept telling him he was eating cat food but he told me it was a delicious pate. I never lied to him.

When we went to Florida, to St. Augustine, I brought back some Fountain of Youth Water. On Sunday morning, I was giving it out to the patrons. When I ran out, I just filled the bottle with tap water and kept giving it out.

There was a guy, calls me "ma tante," he was bitching about his beer not being cold enough. He got up to use the men's room, so I put his beer in the dishwasher to heat it up.

There you have it. I'm sure she'd love to keep answering your questions, so feel free to leave them in the comments. I think we can learn a lot from Maggie, most importantly, don't forget to tip your waitresses and bartenders.

And that is why I don't like pate. It just looks too much like cat food.
Dr. Zhivago is a wonderful movie, my dad and I used to watch it every time it was on the late late late movies when I was a little girl. The book is better.

What a delightful interview! Maggie is such a lot of fun; especially love the less getting married part.
