Let the Lesson Commence!

Here are some of the nearly completed quilts I've rescued from my mother's house. These were shoved in a cupboard in the family room.

Here's a sampler quilt wallhanging. This was the quilt my mother taught newbies at the shop. You can see that only about 1/3 of the border needs to be quilted. These are all hand quilted, of course, of which my mother said, "Quilting by hand is so much more relaxing." (You can relate.) But still, who has grey, blue, and rust in their decor anymore?

This one I am keeping because I love the colors. I am pretty sure this is the one my mother used to talk about quilting with firework-type bursts in the center of the starts, with variegated floss. I may yet. This is completely unquilted.

This would be perfect in our living room. You can see that part of the border is quilted with interlocking circles. Only two sides to go. It's a self-binding quilt, so really close to being done. Think of how long we could have enjoyed this one!

Wouldn't our Christmases have been cozy snuggled under this double Irish chain? This time only one border needs to be quilted. I've shown a close-up of the flying hearts on the border. You can see the heart backing fabric peeking out. (My mom loves Christmas.)

Seeing all this work so close to being finished is just heartbreaking. My mother has arthritis now and can no longer quilt. A quilting friend is coming over tonight to see what she is interested in. Her house is very country, so I am hoping she'll be attracted to quite a few of them.

Fingers crossed that the crafty friend can get these finished off. How sad they weren't used and enjoyed over the years.

I hope that you are able to get these finished and shown off as they deserve to be - they are lovely!

They're all beautiful--even the quilt with the colors that aren't popular nowadays! BTW, I have an acquaintance whose entire house is decorated in those colors! I hope your friend will take some of the quilts--they deserve to be treasured.

At least the quilts are now rescued! I hope your friend takes on the finishing and they can be enjoyed as they ought to be. I feel badly for your mother who can no longer enjoy a beloved pastime.

I told you you would find treasures!

I absolutely love quilts! They are beautiful and like others have said, they deserve a good home where they will be cherished. It is sad to hear that your mother can no longer do what she loves.

I think all the quilts are beautiful Anna - even the one whose colors are no longer popular. Hope they find a good home, but do you have someone who could finish off the ones that you like?

This post has made me quite wistful, such lovely quilts on the verge of being finished. Sometimes I wonder if we leave things unfinished on purpose, so there is always the potential for completion. What would we do if we finished everything?!

Hand quilting is very special, whatever the colours :) Especially so in an age when most things are done by machine or computer.

alright, this is off-topic, but you're the only stitcher I know that I could vent this to - do you have one of those Kelmscott needle minders? I just bought the new Adam and Eve one, and I don't know what I was expecting...but I didn't expect to pay $9 for a MAGNET GLUED ONTO THE BACK OF A SIMPLE CAMEO. Oh my goodness, I'm yanked.

So I'm going to make my own line of needle minders, how I imagined them to be. Except they'll be X-rated, because I have some hilarious candy molds that I've been dying to use for SOMETHING. Would you be interested in testing out one of my raunchy needle minders when I make them?

Sigh. All very beautiful. I wish my mother was able to thread a needle, never mind stitch quilts to hand down to me. (For the record, my Mom use a Buttoneer to attach buttons. Pants in need of hemming went to my grandmother.)

They're all beautiful! The fact that your mom made them makes them extra special. Looks like you have a little quilting to do.

Your mom's quilts are beautiful.

Isn't grey, blue and rust kind of colonial? Could we call it primitive?

Start quilting that star quilt! It is too great not to have out. I love the idea of quilting it with a fireworks pattern. Your mom is too cool.

Love the log cabin too. You have some real treasures here. Get them finished and scattered around your house.

How sad that these quilts are so close to being finished, but haven't been. I hope someone will finish them and love them! I love the quilt with the stars and that log cabin.
