Tree Skirts

First, I think I forgot to thank you for all the wonderful comments on Summer Place. I hope to be able to get a proper photo of it when I pick it up from the framers. Again, thanks for all your kind words.

Michelle asked me what my vision was for my tree skirts. First, you have to know that I have a theme tree. I didn't know I was collecting snowmen ornaments and decorations, I just suddenly had so many of them it was a collection. (I think other people did this purposefully, but I haven't bought more than 4 snowmen ornaments.) So for that tree, I was thinking a blue (remember when I was having trouble typing tattooed? I just spelled that bloo.) wool felt skirt appliqued with white wool snowmen. What I probably will do is take a piece of fleece (blue printed with snowflakes that I bought on sale ages ago) and wrap it to hide the tree apparatus.

The other tree I have is mostly Sandy Cozzolino perforated santa ornaments. Here's a shot of it about a dozen ornaments ago. (Even if I had a camera I couldn't take a picture of the tree because when I went to by it at Joann's, they were out! So we are one 4-foot tree short around these parts.) I'd love to stitch some of those on a linen skirt but that would take a million years. And then I'd have to finish it. In the meantime, I have a red piece of fleece stuffed in the box with the blue fleece and I'll probably just use that. (I bought it with the intention of making a lap quilt for my grandfather, but then realized he wasn't worth the effort and then he died.) (OK that probably sounds callous but he was a real nasty man.)

So as usual, I have lovely visions and no get up and go. Speaking of getting up, my boss got a new boss ten days ago. So far, she has threatened her directors with poor evaluations if they don't "train up" and has insisted that everything for the higher ups go through her. The old boss's boss used to let us do our work; now there is a Chain Of Command. And the commandees are going commando.

I think the snowman applique skirt would be adorable! Until last year, I too used a fleece wrapped around the base of the tree. Last year I bought a blue "velvet" skirt at Target and it sufficed. I originally wanted to stitch some of the SB stocking people onto a skirt to match my stockings, but that seemed like a LOT of effort. Since we put our Polar Express train around the base of the tree, I am now thinking a white skirt - to look like a snowy mountain. Am I too goofy? I'd like to start stitching ornaments too - to put on a second tree. I plan to start with some Prairie Schooler ornaments in 2008. Ah, what plans I have.

I'm afraid that the link to the perforated santa ornaments shows no pictures. There is just a link the the hello.com home page.

One of our funniest family stories involves the lack of a tree skirt at my mother-in-law's house. When my niece and nephew were smaller, we moved family Christmas to my sister-in-law's house, but my father-in-law as a big Christmas decorator, so there were lots of decoration there. When he died, my mother-in-law did not feel like putting up a tree, but finally succumbed to a white three foot artificial tree with miniature Coca Cola ornaments on it. One year when we came home for the holidays, there was the bare tree with ornaments, but no tree skirt. My mother-in-law just didn't want to find the skirt and iron it. Both James and I commented on it, but when my sister-in-law came over we pulled a commando raid. She came up with a linen table cloth and I dragged out the iron. Viola! A tree skirt. My mother-in-law was actually annoyed with us. Maybe it was because every time we came in the tree we all announced how lovely the tree looked with it's snowy white tree skirt. Now she just has a one foot tree that sits on a mirror. So there! This is a woman (my mother-in-law) who hates to have anyone help her in the kitchen. But if we tried to stay in a hotel during the holidays (to avoid having to sleep in the small full sized bed in the tiny bedroom), she would be hurt. I love her to pieces, but she does want things just so.

What I think I love best about the internet is that it allows us to meet people who have schemes as grand as (and perhaps grander than) our own, Michelle. It's comforting!

Kathryn, I tried on two different computers and the link to the post on 12/14/04 works. Once with Foxfire and once with IE.

I agree - I love hearing other people's grand schemes!

Oh goodness, a chain of command? Since our management shifts, nearly a year ago, our company has gone to hell in a handbasket. A very tatty, smelly handbasket. Ugh. Good luck!!

Very funny, Lee! We're leaving that to Britney, Christina, and Paris. We've decided to use this definition: "shock troops for hit-and-run raids." Oh, we've got a plan. You do NOT want to mess with smart women.
